What is Cleocin?

Cleocin is commonly prescribed as a topical solution to treat mild to moderate acne. It can either be used alone, or in combination with an oral antibiotic treatment or other topical solutions. Cleocin is only available with a valid doctor’s prescription.

Cleocin is the brand name for clindamycin, which belongs to the class of drugs known as lincomycin antibiotics. This medication works by stopping or slowing down the growth of acne-causing bacteria.

As your safety is paramount, it is essential that you undergo a thorough online consultation with a licensed doctor before using Cleocin. How to use

It is important that, when using Cleocin, you follow all of the directions provided by your doctor. Before using this topical solution, you should thoroughly cleanse the affected areas of skin and pat them dry.

Cleocin is available in three formulations, a lotion, a foam and a medicated pad. If using the lotion, you should shake the bottle well before applying. Typically, you will apply a thin layer of the lotion over the affected areas twice a day, or as directed by your doctor.

If using the foam, you will typically apply it once a day to the affected areas, or as directed by your doctor. You should spray the foam onto a cool surface or into the cap rather than directly onto your hands or face as the foam will start to melt on contact with warm skin. If the foam appears to be runny, run the can under cold water before use.

If using the medicated pad, apply this gently to the affected area, then discard the pad. You may need to use more than one pad, depending on the size of the area to be treated.

After using any of the formulations you should wash your hands thoroughly. Avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, nose or areas of broken skin. If you accidentally get clindamycin in these areas, rinse them well with plenty of cool water.

It can take between 2 to 6 weeks to start to see a visible improvement in your condition, and up to 12 weeks to see the full benefit. You should inform your doctor if you see no improvement in your condition, or if your condition worsens.

Stay safe

Make sure you read through all of the medication information provided with your Cleocin prescription, including all of the relevant safety information. If there is anything that you are unsure of, you should discuss this carefully with your doctor prior to using Cleocin.

If your doctor has prescribed other topical acne medications to use alongside Cleocin, then it is best to apply these at a different time to Cleocin to try and minimize the risk of skin irritation.

Side effects

Try not to concern yourself too much with side effects as the majority of patients who use Cleocin experience no adverse effects at all. Remember that Cleocin has been prescribed to you by your doctor as he or she deemed that the benefit of treatment is greater to you than the risk of any side effects. That being said, it is worthwhile knowing what to look out for in the rare event that you do experience any adverse effects.

Cleocin may cause localised burning, peeling, dryness, redness or oily skin. If these effects persist or worsen, then you should talk to your doctor as soon as possible.

Small amounts of Cleocin may be absorbed into your bloodstream, very rarely this can lead to Clostridium-difficile-associated diarrhea, caused by resistant bacteria. If you experience persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping or blood/mucus in your stool, then contact your doctor straight away. If you do develop this condition then anti-diarrhea and opioid medications will make these symptoms worse, so their use should be avoided. This condition may develop during your treatment or even weeks to months after stopping treatment.

Rarely, Cleocin may cause a serious allergic reaction. If you experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including rash, itching or swelling of the face, tongue or throat, severe dizziness or trouble breathing, then you should seek emergency medical attention.
