What is Retin-A?

Retin-A, sold under the generic name tretinoin, is a type of retinoid, a family of compounds derived from vitamin A. Retin-A is a prescription-only topical medicine which works at the cellular level to improve the cosmetic appearance of your skin and treat conditions, such as acne. When applied sparingly to the skin, Retin-A promotes shedding of the outer layer of keratinocytes, to leave the skin rejuvenated, feeling fresher and smoother and with a more even tone. Retin-A also speeds up the rate of epidermal cell replication, giving you healthier and softer skin. The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles are improved as collagen fibres within the dermis layer are reorganized and thickened.

When using acne medications, such as Retin-A, it is important to give them plenty of time to start working as it can take up to 2 or 3 months before you start to see any visible results. You may even notice that your skin gets a little bit worse before it starts to get better. It is important to have patience with your treatment.

Research studies have shown that using Retin-A 0.05% gel daily for 12 weeks, significantly reduced the amount of acne pimples on the face.

Order Retin-A online

If your acne prone skin is getting you down and you are getting fed up of breaking out, then now is the time to see your doctor about getting a prescription for Retin-A cream. Retin-A is only available to purchase if you have a valid prescription from a licensed physician. Here at Seven Cells, we can put you in contact with a licensed doctor in your state, who will assess your suitability for Retin-A treatment. If your doctor decides that you will benefit from using Retin-A, they will issue you with a prescription and send this straight to a local pharmacy. Your medication will then be available either for pick-up or for delivery, direct to your door.

How to use

Your doctor will decide on the right strength of Retin-A cream or gel to suit your skin condition and the frequency with which you should use it.

It is recommended that you apply Retin-A at nighttime, shortly before going to bed. This will allow the cream to fully absorb into your skin. However, if your doctor recommends that you apply your cream at a different time of the day, then you should follow their instructions and advice.

Applying Retin-A is a simple process, which will quickly become part of your daily routine. Firstly, you should thoroughly wash your hands and face using water and mild, non-abrasive soap. Make sure that you dry your face gently before applying the cream or gel.

Use the tips of your fingers to gently massage the required amount of Retin-A cream or gel into the affected areas. Keep the medication away from your lips, eyes and other sensitive areas. To obtain even absorption, be sure to apply the cream or gel evenly. You should only need approximately a pea-sized amount of Retin-A to treat your entire face.

Avoid touching your skin or applying any other skincare products for 20 minutes after application of the medicine to ensure that it is fully absorbed. After this time you can apply alcohol-free moisturizer to prevent peeling and flaking.

Stay safe

As a prescription-only medication, Retin A is not available to purchase over the counter. At Seven Cells, Retin-A will only be prescribed to you after an online consultation with a licensed physician, via our platform. This process is much quicker and more efficient than attending an in-person consultation with a dermatologist.

An online consultation with one of our doctors is put in place to keep you safe, after all, your safety is paramount. During this consultation, you should divulge information about your medical history and any medication that you are currently taking, whether prescription drugs, supplements or vitamins.

Side effects

Retin-A is more potent than retinoids, as the latter must be converted into retinoic acid when it comes into contact with your skin. Retin-A, on the other hand, is already pure retinoic acid, so requires no conversion. As ii is more potent, Retin-A may cause more pronounced side effects, including: redness, scaling, itching and dryness.

In rare cases, Retin-A may also cause sensitivity to sunlight, blistering or stinging, swelling and acne or eczema flare-ups.

If you experience any side effects that you are concerned about or any which persist or worsen, then you can discuss these with your doctor via our online platform.

As this is a powerhouse prescription cream your doctor will tell you how to use it. As your skin needs to get used to it, your doctor will recommend that you start with a pea-sized amount 2-3 times a week before bed to build up tolerance. Once you’re used to it, you can apply the cream every night of the week.

The skinny on Tretinoin

Fine lines and wrinkles are anything but fine. As we get older these lines get more pronounced and to understand how Tretinoin works, we need to understand the aging effects on skin. Keratinocytes, the cells that form the outermost layer of the skin adheres and hangs around longer. The inner epidermis also slows down the replication process along with collagen production. This means the outer layer remains much longer allowing lines, spots and all, to show up while leaving the skin dryer and thinner also.

The good news is that Tretinoin is one of the most effective anti-aging products available. It starts working at the cellular level to reverse the visible signs of aging on your skin. However, with anything good, consistency and commitment is the key, as it can take several weeks to see the full effect.

How does Tretinoin work?

One of the earliest effects of Tretinoin is that the outer layer starts shedding off, leaving fresher, smoother and less pigmented skin from the lower layer. The next effect seen is that the epidermal cells start to replicate faster to help replace the outer layer. Finally, collagen production is boosted, causing significant improvement on your skin and reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and acne.

In one of the studies it was found that after 24 weeks of treatment there was significant improvement in photodamaged skin. The participants showed reductions in fine lines, pigmentation, uneven skin tone and improved suppleness. Researchers observed mild side effects like sensitive skin, peeling and erythema.

What this all means is that Tretinoin helps you get rid of the old cells and speeds up the process of making newer ones for young fresh-looking skin. There is a ton of evidence to back up Tretinoin as a powerful and effective anti-aging solution.

The Tretinoin regimen

As it’s a topical solution, Tretinoin is very easy to use. Here’s a step-by-step guide to use Tretinoin:

  1. Apply once a day preferably in the evening before sleep
  2. Wash your face with a mild soap that contains no irritants. Rinse well and pat dry.
  3. Take a pea-size amount of Tretinoin and rub in onto your face where you need it to work. Avoid using a large amount as this doesn’t speed up the process but may lead to increased sensitivity.
  4. Wait for it to be absorbed
  5. After it has dried, use a moisturizer to combat dryness of skin

While using the topical cream or solution avoid getting it in your eyes, mouth, nose and mucous membranes. Also remember:

  1. To protect your skin as Tretinoin makes your skin susceptible to sun damage
  2. It takes dedication and consistency to see results
  3. Avoid it if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding

Tretinoin is likely to irritate your skin when you first start using it. In the beginning of treatment, it’s normal to have mild to moderate redness, dryness, peeling, and itchiness.

These side effects should lessen as your skin adjusts to the medication.

Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate dosage for you for optimal results.

How long before seeing results?

You won’t see results straight away and you need to consistently use Tretinoin before reaping its benefits. In the first few weeks of treatment your skin will get worse but will improve after your skin gets used to it. It can take anywhere from three to six months to notice significant improvement.
